#2027 Superb African Akan - Asante gold-weight from the Gold Coast (Ghana)

This Akan-Asante gold-weight from the Gold Coast (Ghana) is a traditional Islamic weight. Previously, the use of gold was restricted in Africa due to the limitations of Islam. Gold trading often incorporated bronze figurines called mrammuos, representing human/animal forms or abstract designs. All of these were made using the lost-wax process. Gold dust, scales, small boxes, and brass spoons were used as exchange until Europe introduced its currency. This piece features a nice patina. Origin: Akan, Asante ethnic group - GHANA.
