An old and used Bwaba Burkina Faso brass/bronze amulet pendant of a chameleon measures approx : 5" w by 4" h
The chameleon is appreciated as a symbol of protection as it is admired for its intelligence as it has a tremendous capacity to camouflage itself in its surroundings, and possesses all round vision. It is said to protects its wearer against various illnesses.
Smaller examples of brass chameleons are worn by children starting at a very young age.
Cast by the lost wax method, whereby a model is hand-shaped in beeswax, the model is then encased in clay. Once cast, the mold is destroyed, making each piece unique and an original.
The amulet is adorned on one side. NOTE: Please refer to Andr Blandin's "Afrique de l'ouest - Bronzes et autres alliages" (2000) for a similar pieces.
