This magnificent Fang mask features a heart-shaped, elongated face in white, black, and brown. It is a ceremonial piece associated with the Ngil society among the Fang tribe of Gabon. Measuring approximately 32.5" by 11.5" by 9.25", it was traditionally worn by spiritual leaders during rituals to protect against malevolent forces and represent affluence and good fortune. Pablo Picasso was greatly influenced by Fang masks and other African tribal art, incorporating their elements into his famous Cubist works.
