Superb old Large Wood Helmet Mask. Painted and covered in pigment with elaborate superstructure used in the Gelede Masquerade, part of the traditional Yoruba religion. Size rounded in inches: 13.25"high, 8.5”wide, 12.5"deep 3.5 lbs

The Gelede spectacle is a public display using masks and costumes which combine art and dance to entertain, educate and inspire worship in the marketplace. Gelede celebrates mothers, a group that includes female ancestors and deities as well as the elderly women of the community, for the power and spiritual capacity these women have in society. Men almost always perform the masquerade.
