Superb  vintage African Senufo Bird (Hornbill) Statue, hand-carved from a single piece of wood. 24" H × 6" W × 5" D.

Hornbills hold sacred significance among the Senufo peoples of Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Ghana. These noble birds mate for life and fiercely protect their young—a symbolism captured in the erect, protective stance of this sculpture. Known as Setien or Porpianong, hornbill figures were worn on the head during ceremonial dances and processions by the Lo and Poro societies, representing fertility, ancestor veneration, and the mythological founder of the Senufo people.
