#7054 African Dogon Bronze Horseman Gold Weights Mali 2.5" H set of two

 

This spectacular Dogon bronze set of two  horseman weight, also called a mrammuo, measures 2.5" in height and 2.25" by 2.25" and 2"   in width and 0.75" depth. Gold was historically regulated in Africa due to Islamic prohibitions, necessitating the use of bronze figurines as gold weights. This process was achieved through the lost-wax technique and gold dust was traded as currency until European coins replaced it. Scales, boxes, and brass spoons were also used for gold dust.
