A fine Dogon bronze of a horseman or equestrian figure. Horses were rare amongst the Dogon and were considered a status symbol reserved for the elite. This bronze horseman sits atop a horse with an elongated face. Created using the lost wax method, this piece begins as a beeswax model. Wax rods are attached and the entire form is encased in layers of fine clay. When heated, the wax melts and runs out through the channels, leaving a cavity. Molten bronze is poured into the mold, and once cooled and hardened, the clay is broken away to reveal the finished sculpture. Each piece is a unique original—the mold is destroyed after each casting. Origin: Dogon ethnic group, Mali Age: Late 20th century Materials: Bronze Condition: Good Dimensions: 7.25" H × 6" W by 2" D
