This Old Dogon bronze of an equestrian figure with its companion Gold Weight, also known as a mrammuo, is an impressive 2.75" H by 2" D by 0.75" W. Historically, gold was a restricted commodity in Africa due to Islamic restrictions. Akan merchants would use bronze figurines as gold weights, which employed the lost-wax process. Gold dust was traded as currency until Europeans introduced their currency, and traders also used scales, boxes and brass spoons for gold dust.
