This Benin Leopard Bronze work of art from Nigeria measures 4.5" D by 5.75" H by 3" W. It is crafted using the lost wax technique, making each piece a one-of-a-kind. The Benin Kingdom was founded in 1300 by the son of an Ife king, and achieved its pinnacle in the 15th/16th centuries. Portuguese traders living on the coast likely introduced some of the metalworking techniques in Benin at that time. The originals of these castings are valued in the millions and date from 12th to 15th centuries. The Edo and Yoruba people, who inhabit Benin today, are still producing art inspired by these famous masterpieces.
