This superb Benin Leopard Bronze African sculpture from Nigeria measures approximately 5"D by 5.25"H by 2"W. It was crafted using the traditional lost wax technique, making it a unique work of art. The Benin Kingdom was established in the 1300s by a son of an Ife king, but reached its peak in the 15th and 16th centuries. During this period, Benin citizens had contact with Portuguese traders living along the coast; it's likely some of the knowledge used in metalworking came from this exchange. Originals of these bronze sculptures, created between the 12th and 15th centuries, are now worth millions. Today's Edo and Yoruba residents in Benin continue to create art inspired by these famous masterpieces.
