This carved wooden stool features humanoid figures supporting the seat, with a prominent figure at the back characterized by an oval-shaped head. The figures’ spiral eyes are crafted from inlaid shells and decorated with brown, red, and white pigments. The front showcases a high-relief crocodile with large eyes, painted in salmon and white pigments . Known as a 'Teket,' these stools are among the most significant and revered treasures of the Iatmul people. Although resembling a chair, it is not meant for sitting; during debates in men's communal houses, speakers strike it with a bundle of leaves to emphasize their points. The central figure likely represents a clan ancestor or the primeval creator spirit.
