Superb large horizontally-winged carved wood mask from Burkina Faso, featuring an amazing bird design with outstretched wings painted on both sides using natural pigments. This striking "butterfly" mask depicts a bat, hawk, or owl and was traditionally worn by holding a rope attached to the back. The bold black and white  and brick composition creates an arresting presence, enhanced by the scale and sculptural depth. Minor losses consistent with age; overall very good condition.
