This traditional Cameroonian skirt is hand-beaded with a wealth of colors depicting two flying birds , measuring 18"W and 8.5"H. It can be mounted or framed, or used to make a pillow. Before 1961 when the government declared that women should dress more conservatively, Cameroonian women were required to wear 'caches sexes' (literally 'to hide the sex') as pubic aprons. This tradition is still kept alive today – for example, the Matakam women of Northern Cameroon often use narrow iron strips to conceal their sex, backed with a belt of fiber.
