An exceptional Dugn'Be bull helmet mask originating from the Bidjogo people of Guinea Bissau, dating to approximately 1960. This ceremonial artifact functioned as a transformative element in male initiation rites, channeling the raw vitality of youth through ritualistic dance performances that symbolized passage into adulthood. The cattle breed itself carries historical significance, introduced to the islands by Portuguese maritime traders during the colonial period. Presented with its original iron stand, this museum-caliber piece exhibits the patina of age with minor surface wear and hairline cracks; one horn shows a small area of loss. Measures 21"H x 30"W x 10"D. A distinguished example of Bidjogo ceremonial artistry and cultural expression.
