These colonial carvings, or colons, were commonly made during periods of occupation and were especially common in west Africa. Clothing was added to appeal to mostly the Christian Europeans. They represented either the colonizing Europeans or settlers, or African middle class in western attire. Colonial statues reached international popularity after WWII and after decolonization.
